2008 NORTHERN LIGHTS COACHES

The Northern Lights coaching staff invites you to tryout for a place on one of our teams. These coaches are experienced in training athletes from beginners through the college level. Our coaches will make a difference in your development!


Our top 6 coaches have more years of coaching experience than the entire staff of many clubs in Minnesota!
Combined we have over 250 years of coaching experience in our staff!


In addition to our regular staff we are also pleased to have special sessions taught by Scott Swanson and Dave Manka from the University of Minnesota.


Northern Lights pioneered the "Lead" Coach system 5 years ago in Minnesota.
Other clubs have tried to copy us, but nobody has been as successful at training players!
With our unique facility Northern Lights coaches all work and learn together.

18 and Under

18-1 Head:

Pam Dombeck Pam has coached at Northern Lights for 10 years in ages from 16-18's. This past year Pam's 17-1 team won the Regional Championship, and she led them to a 5th place finish in the AAU National Championships. Her teams have always Qualified for USJO Nationals, they have won numerous regional championships, won a few Qualifiers, and placed as high as 5th at the USJO National Championships. Pam played for 4 years at the University of Minnesota, was the assistant coach at the U of M for 2 years, was the interim head coach at the Uof M for year, and is currently a teacher/coach at Hasting High School.

18-1 Asst: Liz Condon Liz enters her 5th year with Northern Lights as an assistant coach. Last year she assisted our 17-1 team. Liz is a former graduate of Northern Lights. She played with the club for 4 years before heading off to college to play. She has coached numerous summer camps for Northern Lights, and Jr club volleyball while she was in college. Liz was known in Northern Lights as being the most dependable passer in the program, and her knowledge and skills will be a great benefit for players on this team. Liz is also expecting her first child this coming spring.

18-1 Asst: Rosey Cashman Rosey is in her 3rd full year with Northern Lights. Last year she was the asst coach on the 16-2's. Rosey graduated from Furman University where she played for 4 years. She has coached Northern Lights summer camps for 6 years (two while she was still in high school), and during her last two years in college she coached 17's and 18's teams. Rosey is a graduate of Northern Lights having played with us for 3 years, the last two of them on our 18-1 team. Rosey will assume the full assistant role when Liz goes on Maternity leave this coming spring.

     
     
18-2/3 Head: Walt Weaver Walt Weaver is truly "The Master" of Minnesota coaches. He is legendary for his 28 year coaching record at Apple Valley High School. Walt is one of the founders of Junior Volleyball in Minnesota back in 1979, and has coached Junior teams longer than any other coach in the state. His Jr teams have finished as high as 5th at the USJO Championships in the 18's Division. In addition to coaching High School and Jr players, Walt was the head coach of the Minnesota Monarchs a professional league that ran in the late 1980's. He is a master of teaching basic skills to any age level player, and is known for his unmatched ability to analyze his team's strengths and weaknesses and then get the most out of them. Northern Lights is extremely pleased to have Walt on staff and we are looking forward to learning from his vast experience.

18-2/3 Head: Jeff Hoeg Jeff is returning to coaching at Northern Lights after taking two years off to be with his family. He has coached with Northern Lights for 11 of our past 14 years. He has done over 30 camps for Northern Lights, and he has coached for 16 years including 5 years as head coach at his High School. In his last year at Northern Lights before he took a break, Jeff was the head coach our 18-2 team which won the Omaha Presidents Day Tournament, finished 2nd at the Colorado Crossroad Qualifier, and placed 5th in the National Division of the USJO Championships. We welcome Jeff back to his home away from home!

18-2/3 Asst: Rachel Langseth

     

17 and Under

17-1 Head: Sean Haugen Sean is starting his 5th year with Northern Lights, and 3rd year as a Head Coach. Last year Sean Head coached our highly successful 17-2 which narrowly missed being the first Northern Lights 2's team to Qualify for the Open Division at USJO Nationals. They did however win the Omaha Presidents Day Classic. Sean has coached at Totino Grace for seven years, the last two as head coach. He has played volleyball for over 15 years and is a MSHSL High School official and a USAV Official.

17-1 Asst: Lynne McDonald Lynne has coached with Northern Lights the past two years heading up our 16-1 & 15-1 teams. Her teams have won the Regional Championships the past two years. This year Lynne has agreed to take an assistant role in order to help develop new coaches for the future, but yet still use her vast experience to guide players. Lynne played at USC and then continued her career with US National team. After retiring from the US National team Lynne began her 20+ year coaching career, with her last 4 years leading her daughter's Jr team into Qualifying for the USJO Championships. After her daughter moved onto college Lynne retired to watch her, but now has gotten back into coaching top level Jr players. Lynne's ability to teach basic skills and then mold 10 players into a winning team is matched by very few other coaches in the area.

     
17-2 Head: Bryan Kellen Bryan is entering his 5th year at Northern Lights. He was the assistant coach for the past 3 years of our 17-1 National Championship team. He is now going to take over the reigns of a team and put what he has learned over the last 3 years to good use. Bryan comes to Northern Lights with a background of coaching 4 years in High School at Cuba City High School in Wisconsin , numerous camps at UW Platteville & various schools, and playing intercollegiate Men's club volleyball. He has is an engineer for Seagate in Bloomington and is excited to coach once again with Northern Lights.

17-2 Asst: Erin Flynn Erin played for the University of Minnesota- Crookston and has a great knowledge of the game. She coached in Crookston for the past two years and is excited to work with such a great group of elite athletes

     
17-3 Head: Sarah Wachter Sarah comes back to us after a stint in Oakland California where she went to school and coached the NORCAL 16-2's. She moved back to finish her degree and with that behind her, wants to get back to Northern Lights, which is where she played some of her club volleyball.

17-3 Asst: Jessica Oldenburg Jessica is a former Northern Lights player who attended Univ North Carolina Charlotte as a 4 year starter. She has coached camps at UNC and has worked with players in her home town of Belle Plaine. Now graduated and back in Minnesota Jessica is looking forward to being in the Northern Lights gym again.
     
17-4 Head: Jason Uller Straight from California Jason brings with him a knowledge and desire for the game that will allow him to train high school athletes to become the best they can be. Jason played for Ohio State University, and Santa Monica, before transferring to UCLA. He is currently completing his 2nd year of law school at the University of Minnesota.

17-4 Asst: Andy Guggisberg Andy is in his 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year Andy joined Northern Lights and ran our 13's & 14's program after working 2 years with Sports Performance in Chicago. There he worked with 12's, 13's, and 14's and helped run the facility.

This year Andy will lead our 13/14's age levels and lead four of our 16's and 17's teams. Originally from New Ulm Minnesota, Andy coached Blaine Jrs and Mpls Magic Jrs for 3 years in Minnesota before going to Chicago.
     

16 and Under


16-1 Head: Adam Beamer Adam has more elite club coaching experience than any other coach in the area. This past year his 18-1 team finished 3rd in the prestigious 18 Open Division at the USJO National Championships. He is the only coach in Minnesota to have led his team to a USJO National Championship which he did two years ago with the 17-1 team. His 20 years of experience have given him 20 National Tournament appearances with 8 top ten finishes. He is the only coach in Minnesota to have qualified teams in the 16 Open, 17 Open, and 18 Open divisions with top 5 finishes in each - proving his ability to get the most out of any age group. He has coached 24 All Americans, and this year is the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Minnesota. He also coached one year as an assistant coach at the U of M in 1994. In 2006 Adam coached our 17-1 team to a 52-0 season winning both the USJO Championships and the AAU Championships. Three years ago Adam coached our 16-1 team to be the only team from Minnesota to qualify in the Open Division at JO's, and also to a 2nd place finish at the AAU National Championships. Four years ago Adam coached that year's highly successful 17-1 team to win the AAU National Championships, and also to a 5th place finish in the Open Division of the USJO National Championships. Adam has also coached at Jefferson High School, Mosquito Coast Jrs, and Minnesota Jrs. Besides his coaching Adam co-directs the entire club operation along with Curt Glesmann.

16-1 Asst: Jen Jacobs Jen is starting her 3rd year with Northern Lights. Last year she was the asst coach on our highly successful 17-2 team. Jen is a former AVCA All American outside hitter from Mankato State University. She has coached Jrs for 7 years and done numerous camps. She also spent one year as an assistant coach at Mankato. Jen is currently coaching high school at Harding and working as a Special Education Assistant.

16-1 Asst: Merideth Nelson Merideth is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. She played her club volleyball at Northern Lights, and went on to be a NCAA All American Middle Blocker at the University of Minnesota. Merideth has learned from and played with the best, and her coaching styles last year with our very successful 16-2 team showed she is a top level coach also. We are very fortunate to have Merideth not only as a coach, but also an excellent role model for our athletes.  
     
16-2 Head: Sunny Choh Sunny is in her 3rd year at Northern Lights. Last year Sunny's 16-2 team was 2nd at the AAU National Championships, and placed 3rd at two National Qualifiers. She has the ability to not only teach skills, but also bring a team together into a single working unit. Sunny rejoined Northern Lights after having graduated from the club 8 years ago. She is currently the assistant coach at St. Bernards High School, and is working on her Ph.D. in the medical field

16-2 Asst: Marcia Kreklow Marcia is in her 2nd year with Northern Lights. Last year she coached our highly successful 15-2 team which placed 3rd at the AAU National Championships. Marcia comes from a strong background of volleyball. She played 4 years of college ball at Drake as a middle & outside hitter. She has coached numerous MVI Camps, Jr clubs and High School teams in the past 15 years. In a previous life, Marcia has also spent many hours on the sand court with club director Curt Glesmann and 12-1's head coach Chris Denson.

     
16-3 Head: Raina Pilon Raina is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she led our 15-3 team to a 3rd place finish at Regionals and qualified for USJO Nationals. Her team also finished 3rd at the Omaha Presidents Day Classic. Raina previously played for Northern Lights during her high school career. Last fall Raina jumped head first back into the grind helping with our fall clinic series and has had many players and parents informing the staff of the wonderful job she does.

16-3 Asst: Jamie Hedin Jamie is returning to Northern Lights after a year off to complete her education. In the 2006 season she was the head coach of our 15-3 team. This past fall she has been working our camps and youth clinics and is excited about getting back in the gym for the club season.

16-4 Head: Jackie Richter
Jackie has been coaching for Minneapolis Southwest High School for the past 3 years. She taken the program from being at the bottom to now being tops in the conferance. She comes to us this year ready to learn more. She has been working with Gene McBride, a long time Northern Lights coach, and has Gene has nothing but wonderful things to say about her.

16-4 Asst: Crystal Dohlman Crystal is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Prior to that she coached for two very successful seasons at New Prague. She has coached numerous camps, including the Northern Lights camps the past two summers. Crystal also does private lessons for Northern Lights. She is currently coaching Lakeville South Junior Varsity this fall. Crystal played with Northern Lights during her high school career, but an injury prevented her from playing in college. Crystal now has taken on coaching very passionately.

     

15 and Under

Lead Coach

Chad Becker Chad is entering his 8th year at Northern Lights, and his 6th year as a full time staff member of the club. Chad has been the lead coach in our 15's age division for the past 5 years and the lead coach in our 12's age division for the past 2 years. His strong skill development training has unquestionably given our players the basis they need for high level competition. Our older age level teams success in the past few years are a direct result of Chad's dedication to teaching our young players strong basic skills.

     
15-1 Head: Chad Becker Chad is entering his 8th year at Northern Lights, and his 6th year as a full time staff member of the club. Last year Chad coached our highly successful 15-1 team to win the AAU National Championships and a 3rd place finish at the 15 Open USJO National Champioinships. During the 2007 season, Chad's 15-1 team won 2 National Qualifiers and the Omaha Presidents Day tournament. He has coached 9 All Americans. Chad has also been coaching for 11 years at Eden Prairie High School. Prior to his association with Northern Lights Chad coached 3 years at Club Tonka, and 5 years with the Eden Prairie Girls Athletic Association.

15-1 Asst: Kari Raymond Now in her 5th year with Northern Lights. Last year she and Chad guided our 15-1 team to its AAU National Championship and 3rd place finish in the 15 Open Division at USJO Nationals. Kari is a former middle blocker at Northern Lights. She played with us for two years, graduated and attended Drake University. While at Drake she not only played and studied, but she also coached Jrs for IPVA. After graduating Kari took a teaching job in Iowa and coached/directed a club for 2 years in Indianola. Kari then moved back to the Twin Cities to teach math in the Bloomington Schools. She is currently the head coach at Bloomington Kennedy. Kari also is our Middle Blocking Coach.

     
15-2 Head: Marlon Johnson Marlon has coached at Northern Lights for 9 years working with ages 14-16's. Last year Marlon worked with Lynne McDonald on our 16-1 team and for the previous 2 years Marlon has coached at the 15's level working with Chad, Lynne & Kari. Marlon has coached for the past 13 years at various levels, and in what he refers to as his "younger days" he was an active player. Marlon combines loads of enthusiasm with solid knowledge to get the most out his players.

15-2 Asst: Angela Hoover Angela is in her 4th year with Northern Lights. Last year she assisted with Marcia Kreklow on our very successful 15-2 team. She was previously the head coach of our 15-2 team, but last year she stepped down to work on a Master's Program. She grew up in Omaha and played for River City Jrs. After graduating from Southwest State University where she played for 4 years, she returned to Omaha and coached with Nebraska Elite for 3 years. With a job transfer to Minneapolis she is now part of the Northern Lights staff.

     
15-3 Head: Mike Domeier This is Mike's 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year he led our 16-3 team to qualify for USJO Nationals. His players have nothing but great things to say about him, and he loves working with kids. Previously Mike spent the 3 years working with the Jr club out of Norwood-Young America. where he had been responsible for coaching and organizing that club.

15-3 Asst: Jerry Beckmann Jerry is a fantastic coach who has a passion for the game that is noticeable from a distance. He led the Burnsville Thunder 14-1 team to the top 5 of the 14's power league this year. We can say with certainty that we are glad to have him coaching with us instead of against us.

15-4 Head: Linda Laird Linda is starting her 4th year at Northern Lights. She has coached a variety of ages ranging from 12's- 15's. A very sound technical coach, Linda understands the small aspects of the game that make a big difference. Linda's oldest daughter, Monica Laird, played for 6 years at Northern Lights as one of our top setters and is now a Jr in college.

15-4 Asst: Holly Loeffler This is Holly's 3rd year with Northern Lights. Last year Holly coached our 14-4 team. Holly also coached previously with Northern Lights in our 12's program. She has coached and managed the Eagan Aerial Attack club for several years, and has also assisted at the 9th grade level at Eagan High School.

     

14 and Under / 13 and Under

Lead Coach Andy Guggisberg Andy is in his 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year Andy joined Northern Lights and ran our 13's & 14's program after working 2 years with Sports Performance in Chicago. There he worked with 12's, 13's, and 14's and helped run the facility.

This year Andy will lead our 13/14's age levels and lead four of our 16's and 17's teams. Originally from New Ulm Minnesota, Andy coached Blaine Jrs and Mpls Magic Jrs for 3 years in Minnesota before going to Chicago.
     
14-1 Head: Michelle Miller Michelle has coached with Northern Lights for the last 11 years. Last year she led the 14-1 team to qualifying for USJO Nationals, and 5 of her players now are on High School Varsity teams! Two years ago Michelle led her 14-1 team to a 5th place finish in the 14 Open Division of the USJO Nationals and a 5th place finish at AAU Nationals. She is the only coach in Minnesota to qualify teams in multiple years in the 14 Open Division of USJO Nationals. Michelle has coached at Eastview, Kennedy, Rosemount and Burnsville High Schools. Prior to coaching Michelle played at the University of Minnesota as a setter. With her strong basic skill development Michelle always gives our 14's a good base for the future.

 
14-1 Asst: Heidi Malenke Heidi has been an assistant coach for the past 8 years at the 14-1's & 13-1's levels. She has assisted with Michelle for 2 years now. Prior to her coaching at Northern Lights Heidi played for SWMN Jrs and then went to college and played at South Dakota State University. Heidi loves to play and coach the game and does many of the Northern Lights Youth Clinics.

     
14-2 Head: Amy Johnson
(Lundberg)
Amy is in her 3rd year with Northern Lights. Last year she led our 14-3 team and two years ago she was a floating coach taking positions as needed in our 13's and 14's program. Amy has played volleyball since 5th grade. She is a Kennedy HS graduate and played Jrs with ClubTonka and Northern Lights during her high school career. She attended college at River Falls and played 4 years of college volleyball there. She has coached summer camps for 4 years, and previously coached with Bloomington Jrs.

14-2 Asst: Kim Hook Kim is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she was the assitant to our 14-2 team. Kim is a teacher in the Burnsville School district and coaches volleyball at Nicollet Jr HS. She is originally from Thief River Falls where she played during her high school days. She attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

     
14-3 Head: Gary McCullum Gary enters his 5th year with us. He is highly liked by his players, and he makes the game fun for everyone. Gary has been involved in volleyball starting in high school where he played on the Apple Valley Waves boys JO team and learned VB from Walt Weaver.

14-3 Asst: Johnna Wangensteen Johnna is currently assisting the Woodbury high school program. She has over 30 years of playing experience and has coached at an elite level before. Johnna will share her abundant knowledge and excitement for the game with our 13's and 14's

14-4 Head: Joanna Lyons Joanna has been coaching at Shakopee HS for the past 4 years at either the B squad or JV level. She has coached 12's for the Shakopee JO program.

13-1 Asst: Lindsey Brown Lindsey is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she was the assistant to our very successful 13-1 team that won the Regionals and qualified for the USJO Nationals. Lindsey graduated from Clark College in Iowa where she also played. Lindsey played in High School and at Clark College. She has coached two years at the high school and club level in Iowa. Lindsey's passion for the game and helping others is very apparent the first time you speak with her. She is highly energetic and with a degree in communication has many ways to get her point across.

     
13-2 Head: Nicole Santelman Nicole is a great coach with a mind that always wants to know more. A very dedicated individual who has traveled to a few different clubs over the past few years, she has found a home here at Northern Lights.

13-3 Head: Diana Goembel Diana comes to us with 4 years of coaching experience in club volleyball. She has taken the last 2 years off and is excited to get back into coaching.

13-3 Asst: Erin Olson Erin has been playing for 12 years and after a successful career at Hill Murray has decided to join us. In her own words "I am excited to coach for the most respected club in the midwest."

     

12 and Under / 11 and Under

Lead Coach Chad Becker Chad is entering his 8th year at Northern Lights, and his 6th year as a full time staff member of the club. Chad has been the lead coach in our 15's age division for the past 5 years and the lead coach in our 12's age division for the past 2 years. 12-1 Head: Christine Denson Chris Denson has been playing and coaching volleyball for the past 20+ years. This is her sixth year with Northern Lights. Last year she was our 12-1's head coach, and she liked it so much she is coming back for again this year! Prior to last year Chris has led our 17-2 teams qualifying them for the USJO Championships in both years. She was head coach at Minnetonka High School for a total of 8 years. A graduate middle blocker of Drake University Chris has received several USAV All American awards during her playing days.

12-1 Asst: Vicki Seliger Continuing where she left off last year, Vicki will once again work with the 12's. Vicki is a graduate of Northern Lights back when it was known as North Country Jrs. (We won't say how long ago that was.) She has coached on and off at Northern Lights over the years, and she is currently the head coach at Hopkins High School. She is a graduate of Iowa State where she played as a middle blocker.

     
12-2 Head: Deanna Lemke Deanna is in her 4th year at Northern Lights. Last year she ran our 11-1 team. Deanna played volleyball for McGregor High School. She is an avid co-rec and womens player for the last 13 years. Deanna has coached camps for the Chaska area and is director of the Shakopee schools in house league.

12-2 Asst: Gretchen Gilbertson Gretchen will be joining Northern Lights this year after coaching JO at the 12's age level for Apple Valley and assistant coaching at the 14's age level for Burnsville. Gretchen has also coached Apple Valley's South Metro team for 3 years.

     
11-1 Head: Mark Roesner Mark is in his 2nd year of coaching at Northern Lights. Last year he was the assistant coach of our very successful 13-2 team. Last year Mark was so into coaching and making 13's better he made a team so he could have a group of kids that might not have had the chance an opportunity to play and continue to increase their skills. A man that understands a lot about the game and is eager to always learn more, Mark will be great to work with these young kids and help them learn the game as well.

11-1 Asst: Krista Doyle Krista is in her 2nd year of coaching at Northern Lights. She is a graduate of University of Minnesota where she played her college career as an outside hitter in the Big Ten. Her Junior career was with Kalamazoo Jrs, one of Michigan's top Jr clubs at that time. She has a degree in Speech/Communications. Krista will be joining Deanna in the winter to continue the wonderful job they are already doing working camps together. Krista has a great mixture of knowledge, passion, and excitement to coach at this level.
