2009 NORTHERN LIGHTS COACHES

The Northern Lights coaching staff invites you to tryout for a place on one of our teams. These coaches are experienced in training athletes from beginners through the college level. Our coaches will make a difference in your development!


Our top 6 coaches have more years of coaching experience than the entire staff of many clubs in Minnesota!
Combined we have over 250 years of coaching experience in our staff!


In addition to our regular staff we are also pleased to have special positional sessions taught by:

Northern Lights pioneered the "Lead" Coach system 6 years ago in Minnesota.
Other clubs have tried to copy us, but nobody has been as successful at training players!
With our unique facility Northern Lights coaches all work and learn together.


Below is a listing of each team and their coaches as we currently know it. This page will be updated as we finalize each team's coaches. Complete bio's on all the coaches will be available on our homepage link as we finalize the staff.


18 and Under

18-1 Co-Head:

Sean Haugen Sean is starting his 6th year with Northern Lights, and 4th year as a Head Coach. Last year Sean head coached our highly successful 17-1 team, which qualified for the 17 Open Division by taking 2nd at the Northern Lights Qualifier. They went on to take 5th at USAV Nationals. The 17-1's also won the East Coast Championship Beast of the East tournament in May & placed 5th at AAU Nationals in June. Sean coached at Totino Grace for eight years, the last three as head coach. He has played volleyball for over 15 years and is a MSHSL High School official and a USAV Official.

18-1 Co-Head Lynne McDonald Lynne has coached with Northern Lights the past three years heading up our 16-1 & 15-1 teams, and assisting on our 17-1 team. Her teams have won the Regional Championships the past three years. Last year Lynne agreed to take an assistant role in order to help develop new coaches for the future, but yet still use her vast experience to guide players. She will continue this role for the 2008-09 season. Lynne played at USC and then continued her career with the US National team. After retiring from the US National team Lynne began her 20+ year coaching career, with her last 4 years leading her daughter's Jr team into Qualifying for the USJO Championships. After her daughter moved onto college Lynne retired to watch her, but now has gotten back into coaching top level Jr players. Lynne's ability to teach basic skills and then mold 10 players into a winning team is matched by very few other coaches in the area.

     
18-2 Head: Jeff Hoeg Jeff returned to coaching at Northern Lights last year after taking two years off to be with his family. He has coached with Northern Lights for 12 of our past 15 years. He has done over 30 camps for Northern Lights, and he has coached for 17 years including 5 years as head coach at his High School. In his last year at Northern Lights before he took a break, Jeff was the head coach our 18-2 team which won the Omaha Presidents Day Tournament, finished 2nd at the Colorado Crossroad Qualifier, and placed 5th in the National Division of the USJO Championships. Last year he coached our 18-3 team.

18-2 Asst: Rachel Langseth Rachel is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. She is a former middle blocker from the University of Minnesota Duluth campus. Last year she assisted Jeff Hoeg at the 18's age level. She was extremely helpful in answering many of our 18's various questions and concerns about their upcoming college years. We are pleased to have Rachel in the gym again this year.

     

17 and Under

17-1 Head: Adam Beamer Adam has more elite club coaching experience than any other coach in the area. This past year his 16-1 team won the 16 Open AAU National Championship, and finished 3rd in the prestigious 16 Open Division at the USJO National Championships. His 21 years of experience have given him 21 National Tournament appearances with 4 National Championships and 9 top ten finishes. He is the only coach in Minnesota to have led his team to a USJO National Championship which he did three years ago in the 17 Open Division. He is the only coach in Minnesota to have qualified and medaled teams in the 16 Open, 17 Open, and 18 Open divisions at USJO Nationals - proving his ability to get the most out of any age group. He has coached 24 All Americans, was the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Minnesota in 2008, and the assistant coach in 1994. In 2006 Adam coached our 17-1 team to a 52-0 season winning both the USJO Championships and the AAU Championships. Adam has also coached at Jefferson High School, Mosquito Coast Jrs, and Minnesota Jrs. Besides his coaching Adam co-directs the entire club operation along with Curt Glesmann.

17-1 Asst: Jen Jacobs Jen is starting her 4th year with Northern Lights. Last year she was the assistant coach on our highly successful 16-1 team, and two years ago was the assistant coach for our very good 17-2 team. Jen is a former AVCA All American outside hitter from Mankato State University. She has coached Jrs for 8 years and done numerous camps. She also spent one year as an assistant coach at Mankato. Jen is currently coaching high school at Harding and working as a Special Education Assistant.

     
17-2 Head: Christine Denson Chris Denson has been playing and coaching volleyball for the past 20+ years. This is her seventh year with Northern Lights. For the past two years she was our 12-1's head coach. Last year, the 12-1 team played in the 14 & Under Power League, placed 3rd at the Northern Lights Qualifier, and won the NCR Presidents' Day Festival! Prior to 2007, Chris led our 17-2 teams qualifying them for the USJO Championships in both years. She was head coach at Minnetonka High School for a total of 8 years. A graduate middle blocker of Drake University, Chris has received several USAV All-American awards during her playing days

17-2 Asst:
Sunny & Marcia will be splitting the Asst duties.
Sunny Choh Sunny is in her 4th year at Northern Lights. Last year, Sunny head coached our 16-2 team, which boasted a 79-4 record. They won the Omaha President's Day Classic, the Northern Lights Qualifier, and an AAU National Championship. Two years ago Sunny's 16-2 team was 2nd at the AAU National Championships, and placed 3rd at two National Qualifiers. She has the ability to not only teach skills, but also bring a team together into a single working unit. Sunny rejoined Northern Lights after having graduated from the club 9 years ago. She has a Ph.D. in the Medical Field and is currently teaching college classes.

17-2 Asst:
Sunny & Marcia will be splitting the Asst duties.
Marcia Kreklow Marcia is in her 3rd year with Northern Lights. Last year she was the assistant coach for our highly successful 16-2 team which placed 1st at the AAU National Championships and won the Northern Lights Qualifier. In 2007, Marcia was the head coach for our 15-2 team, which placed 3rd at the AAU National Championships. Marcia comes from a strong background of volleyball. She played 4 years of college ball at Drake as a middle & outside hitter. She has coached numerous MVI Camps, Jr clubs and High School teams in the past 15 years. In a previous life, Marcia has also spent many hours on the sand court with club director Curt Glesmann and 17-2's head coach Chris Denson.

     
17-3 Head: Jackie Richter Jackie is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she coached our 16-4 team and led them to several silver and gold bracket finishes. Her players love her and fiercely stand behind her. Jackie has been coaching for Minneapolis Southwest High School for the past 4 years. She taken that program from being at the bottom to now being tops in the conferance.

17-3 Asst: Samantha More Samantha will be entering her first year with Northern Lights. During the past two seasons, she coached 16's for Club Dakota. She is a former setter / right side hitter, and is currently attending Normandale Community College.

     
17-4 Head: Jason Uller Jason is in his 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year he was the head coach for our 16-5 team which beat many other clubs #1 teams! Straight from California Jason brings with him a knowledge and desire for the game that will allow him to train high school athletes to become the best they can be. Jason played for Ohio State University, and Santa Monica, before transferring to UCLA. He is currently completing his 3rd year of law school at the University of Minnesota.

17-4 Asst: Adam Cress Adam is starting his first year at Northern Lights. During the 2008 High School season he was the head coach at Northfield High School.

     

16 and Under


16-1 Head: Pam Dombeck Pam has coached at Northern Lights for 11 years in ages from 16-18's. This past season Pam's 18-1 team took 3rd at the Northern Lights Qualifier, earning them a spot in the 18-Open Division at USJO Nationals. Her team also placed 3rd in the 18 Open Division at the AAU National Championships. Her teams have always Qualified for USJO Nationals, they have won numerous regional championships, won a few Qualifiers, and placed as high as 5th at the USJO National Championships. Pam played for 4 years at the University of Minnesota, was the assistant coach at the U of M from 1991-1993, and was the interim head coach in1994. Pam is currently a teacher at Hastings High School.

16-1 Asst: Liz Condon Liz enters her 6th year with Northern Lights as an assistant coach. Last year she assisted our 18-1 team. Liz is a former graduate of Northern Lights. She played with the club for 4 years before heading off to college to play. She has coached numerous summer camps for Northern Lights and Jr. Club volleyball while she was in college. Liz was known in Northern Lights as being the most dependable passer in the program, and her knowledge and skills will be a great benefit for players on this team. Liz had her first child last spring, and is enjoying being a new mom.

     
16-2 Head: Raina Pilon Raina is in her 3rd year at Northern Lights. Last year her very athletic 16-3 team earned an American Bid for USJO Nationals and took 5th at the AAU National Championships. In 2007, she led our 15-3 team to a 3rd place finish at Regionals and qualified for USJO Nationals. This team also finished 3rd at the Omaha Presidents Day Classic. Raina previously played for Northern Lights during her high school career. Raina has had many players and parents informing the staff of the wonderful job she does.

16-2 Asst: Jared Rendell Jared joined the Northern Lights coaching staff halfway through our 2007-08 season and was the asst coach for our 16-4 team. He brings a ton of enthusiasm and ambition, and is looking forward to another great season!

     
16-3 Head: Kari Raymond Now in her 6th year with Northern Lights. Last year she and Chad guided our 15-1 team to win the Regional Qualifier and place 9th at USJO Nationals by only losing one match! Two seasons ago, Kari & Chad led our 15-1 team to an AAU National Championship and 3rd place finish in the 15 Open Division at USJO Nationals. Kari is a former middle blocker at Northern Lights. She played with us for two years, graduated and attended Drake University. While at Drake she not only played and studied, but she also coached Jrs for IPVA. After graduating Kari took a teaching job in Iowa and coached/directed a club for 2 years in Indianola. Kari then moved back to the Twin Cities to teach math & coach at the Bloomington Schools. She is currently a math teacher at Rosemount HS. Kari also is our Middle Blocking Coach.

16-3 Asst: Melinda Hoppe Melinda head coached for Moorhead Juniors the past couple years, and now is joining the Northern Lights coaching staff for 2008-09. She played at MN State-Moorhead between 2000-2003, where she was voted Team MVP and Captain twice. Melinda is employed as a U.S. Probation Officer.

     
16-4 Head: Amanda Mackenthun Amanda helped found the Keewenaw Select Volleyball Club in Houghton, Michigan. She coached the 18-1 team at that club, as well as coaching for High Voltage 18-1s in 2007. She played for Michigan Tech University as their starting setter all four years. Amanda is employed as a Management Trainee for JCPenney Corp.

16-4 Asst: Karyn Polland Karyn was the asst coach for our 16-5 team last season, and helped with Northern Lights summer camps this past year.

     
16-5 Head: Jerry Beckmann Jerry was the head coach for the Northern Lights 15-5 team last year, and has worked at several of our camps since 2007. Prior to Northern Lights, Jerry coached for Burnsville Thunder. He still enjoys playing volleyball in his free time.

16-5 Asst: Melissa Johnson

15 and Under

Lead Coach

Chad Becker Chad is entering his 9th year at Northern Lights, and his 7th year as a full time staff member of the club. Chad has been the lead coach in our 15's age division for the past 6 years and the lead coach in our 12's age division for the past 3 years. His strong skill development training has unquestionably given our players the basis they need for high level competition. Our older age level teams' success in the past few years are a direct result of Chad's dedication to teaching our young players strong basic skills.

     
15-1 Head: Chad Becker Chad is entering his 9th year at Northern Lights, and his 7th year as a full time staff member of the club. Last year, Chad led our 15-1 team to a 1st place finish at the Regional Qualifier, and a 9th place finish at USJO Nationals. In 2008, Chad coached our highly successful 15-1 team to win the AAU National Championships and a 3rd place finish at the 15 Open USJO National Championships. During the 2007 season, Chad's 15-1 team won 2 National Qualifiers and the Omaha Presidents Day tournament. He has coached 9 All Americans. Chad has also been coaching for 12 years at Eden Prairie High School. Prior to his association with Northern Lights, Chad coached 3 years at Club Tonka, and 5 years with the Eden Prairie Girls Athletic Association.

15-1 Asst: Jessica Oldenburg Jessica is starting her 2nd year as a coach at Northern Lights. Last year she assisted at the 17's age level. She is a former Northern Lights player who attended Univ North Carolina Charlotte as a 4 year starter. She has coached camps at UNC and has worked with players in her home town of Belle Plaine. Now graduated and back in Minnesota Jessica loves working with our dedicated athletes and is excited about working with some of the younger players this year.
15-1 Asst: Hailey Cowles Hailey is in her 7th year at Northern Lights. 5 years as a player, and 2 years as a coach. Hailey played on Northern Lights 2006 National Championship team, and is now a Golden Gopher. Last year Hailey assisted on our 15-3 team and was ranked by the players as one of the most inspiring coaches in the club. We are proud to watch Hailey not only on the court at the University of Minnesota, but also on the court at Northern Lights.
     
15-2 Head: Marlon Johnson Marlon has coached at Northern Lights for 10 years working with ages 14-16's. Last year Marlon worked with Angela Hoover on our 15-2 team and for the previous 3 years Marlon has coached at the 15's & 16's level working with Chad, Lynne & Kari. Marlon has coached for the past 14 years at various levels, and in what he refers to as his "younger days" he was an active player. Marlon combines loads of enthusiasm with solid knowledge to get the most out his players

15-2 Asst: Tiffini Christianson Tiffini comes to us from Nebraska, where she has coached the past few years at the 16s level for Nebraska Impact and Nebraska Elite.

     
15-3 Head: Mike Domeier This is Mike's 3rd year at Northern Lights. Last year, Mike coached our 15-3 team to a 5th place finish at the Omaha Presidents Day Classic. In 2007, he led our 16-3 team to qualify for USJO Nationals. His players have nothing but great things to say about him, and he loves working with kids. Previously Mike spent 3 years working with a Jr club out of Norwood-Young America, where he was responsible for coaching and organizing the club.

15-3 Asst: Tibi Mozes Tibi helped out with our 15-1 team last year, and is coming to us this season in a more defined role. He has been coaching the past 7 years with the Eden Prairie Volleyball Association. Tibi also played and coached for the Swedish Amateur League for over a decade.

     
15-4 Head: Linda Laird Linda is starting her 5th year at Northern Lights. She has coached a variety of ages ranging from 12's- 15's. A very sound technical coach, Linda understands the small aspects of the game that make a big difference. Linda's oldest daughter, Monica Laird, played for 6 years at Northern Lights as one of our top setters and is now a Sr. in college.

15-4 Asst: Holly Loeffler This is Holly's 4th year with Northern Lights, and her 2nd as the 15-4 asst coach. Holly also coached previously with Northern Lights in our 12's program. She has coached and managed the Eagan Aerial Attack club for several years, and has also assisted at the 9th grade level at Eagan High School.

     
15-5 Head: Joanna Lyons Joanna is in her 3rd year at Northern Lights. Last year she was the head coach of our 14-4 team. Joanna has also coached at Shakopee HS for the 4 years at either the B squad or JV level. She has coached 12's for the Shakopee JO program.

15-5 Asst: Johnna Wangensteen Johnna is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she assisted in our 14's program with the 14-3 team. Johnna is currently assisting the Woodbury high school program. She has over 30 years of playing experience and has coached at an elite level before. Johnna will share her abundant knowledge and excitement for the game with our 15's


14 and Under / 13 and Under

Lead Coach Kari Raymond Now in her 6th year with Northern Lights. Last year she and Chad guided our 15-1 tea, tp a 9th place finish at the USJO National Championships and a 5th place finish at the AAU National Championships. Kari is a former middle blocker at Northern Lights. She played with us for two years, graduated and attended Drake University. While at Drake she not only played and studied, but she also coached Jrs for IPVA. After graduating Kari took a teaching job in Iowa and coached/directed a club for 2 years in Indianola. Kari then moved back to the Twin Cities to teach math in the Bloomington Schools. She was the head coach at Bloomington Kennedy for 3 years before moving to the Rosemount School system. Kari also is our Middle Blocking Coach and is the Lead coach for 14's & 13's.

     
14-1 Head: Walt Weaver Walt Weaver is truly "The Master" of Minnesota coaches. He is legendary for his 28 year coaching record at Apple Valley High School. Walt is one of the founders of Junior Volleyball in Minnesota back in 1979, and has coached Junior teams longer than any other coach in the state. His Jr teams have finished as high as 5th at the USJO Championships in the 18's Division. In addition to coaching High School and Jr players, Walt was the head coach of the Minnesota Monarchs, a professional league that ran in the late 1980's. He is a master of teaching basic skills to any age level player, and is known for his unmatched ability to analyze his team's strengths and weaknesses and then get the most out of them. Northern Lights is extremely pleased to have Walt on staff and we are looking forward to learning from his vast experience. He head-coached our 18-2 team last year, and led them to a 3rd place bronze medal finish at AAU Nationals.

14-1 Asst: Steve Getchell Steve Getchell is another legend in the Minnesota volleyball community. Steve has coached volleyball for the past 25+ years. He has coached at numerous schools and is currently the Co-Head coach at Maple Grove High School with his wife Monika. Steve and Walt also run the MVI Volleyball Camps.
     
14-2 Head: Amy Johnson Amy is in her 4th year with Northern Lights. Last year she led our 14-2 team to a 1st place finish in the Northern Lights Power League, and multiple victories over 15 and 16-year-old teams. In 2007, she led our 14-3 team and three years ago she was a floating coach taking positions as needed in our 13's and 14's program. Amy has played volleyball since 5th grade. She is a Kennedy HS graduate and played Jrs with Club Tonka and Northern Lights during her high school career. She attended college at River Falls and played 4 years of college volleyball there. She has coached summer camps for 4 years, and previously coached with Bloomington Jrs.

14-2 Asst: Kim Hook Kim is in her 3rd year at Northern Lights. Last year she was the assistant to our 14-2 team. Kim is a teacher in the Burnsville School district and coaches volleyball at Metcalf Junior HS. She is originally from Thief River Falls where she played during her high school days. She attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

     
14-3 Head: Andrea Hannem Andrea is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she assisted on our 13-2 team. She is a former player college player who is now in pharmacy school. She loves working with young players and is looking forward to another great year at Northern Lights.

14-3 Asst: Brendan Erickson Brendan is in his 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year he assisted at the 14's age level. He has been around volleyball most of his life, and played club ball for Bloomington during high school. He is currently a Jr. at St. Thomas, majoring in HR Management and Business Communication.
     
14-4 Head: Gary McCullum Gary enters his 6th year with us. Last year he was the head coach of our 14-3 team. He is highly liked by his players, and he makes the game fun for everyone. Gary has been involved in volleyball starting in high school where he played on the Apple Valley Waves boys JO team and learned VB from Walt Weaver.

14-4 Asst: Nathan Loehrs Nathan has coached for Edina HS the past two seasons, and played for the UMD Men's Club team from 2003-07.

     
13-1 Head: Vicki Seliger Vicki has worked with our 12's the past two seasons and will move up an age group this year. Vicki is a graduate of Northern Lights back when it was known as North Country Jrs. (We won't say how long ago that was.) She has coached on and off at Northern Lights over the years, and she is currently the head coach at Hopkins High School. She is a graduate of Iowa State where she played as a middle blocker.

13-1 Asst: Crystal Dohlman Crystal is in her 3rd year at Northern Lights. She head-coached our 13-1 team last season & our 16-3 team in 2007. Prior to that she coached for two very successful seasons at New Prague. She has coached numerous camps, including the Northern Lights camps the past three summers. She is currently coaching Lakeville South Junior Varsity this fall. Crystal played with Northern Lights during her high school career, but an injury prevented her from playing in college. Crystal now has taken on coaching very passionately.

     
13-2 Head: Deanna Lemke Deanna is in her 5th year at Northern Lights. Last year she ran our 12-2 team. Deanna played volleyball for McGregor High School. She is an avid co-rec and women's player for the last 13 years. Deanna has coached camps for the Chaska area and is director of the Shakopee schools' in-house league, as well as a Middle School / Junior High coach.

13-2 Asst: Erin Flynn Erin is returning for her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she assisted on our very strong 17-2 team, qualifying them for USJO Nationals and taking them to a 5th place finish at AAU Nationals. Erin played for the University of Minnesota- Crookston and has a great knowledge of the game. She previously coached in Crookston for two years.

     
13-3 Head: Gretchen Gilbertson Gretchen is in her 2nd year at Northern Lights. Last year she assisted at our 12's age level. Previously she has coached at the 12's age level for Apple Valley and at the 14's age level for Burnsville. Gretchen has also coached Apple Valley's South Metro team for 3 years.

13-3 Asst: Maddie Lenhard Maddy is a former Northern Lights setter. She is currently a sophomore at Carleton College, where she majors in Biology and plays for the Knights Her coaching experience includes head coaching for Northfield Juniors and working Northern Lights summer camps. She is looking forward to returning to NL and working with our 13's program.

     

12 and Under / 11 and Under

Lead Coach Chad Becker Chad is entering his 9th year at Northern Lights, and his 7th year as a full time staff member of the club. Chad has been the lead coach in our 15's age division for the past 6 years and the lead coach in our 12's age division for the past 3 years. His strong skill development training has unquestionably given our players the basis they need for high level competition. Our older age level teams success in the past few years are a direct result of Chad's dedication to teaching our young players strong basic skills.

     
12-1 Head: Mark Roesner Mark is in his 3rd year of coaching at Northern Lights. Last year he was the head coach of our very successful and mighty 11's team! They finished 3rd in the 12's power league, 2nd in the annual Rochester 12's tournament, and 8th in the 12's division of the Northern Lights Qualifier. He truly had them motivated.

12-1 Asst: Laura Lane Laura attended Iowa State University, where she played for four years and helped run their volleyball camps. She now works for Midwest Volleyball Warehouse, and is looking forward to working with our young athletes.

     
12-2 Head: Doug VanBenthuysen Doug is starting his 3rd year at Northern Lights. He has worked in the 12's and 13's level at Lights for 3 years. He previously coached 4 years with Club Extreme Jrs. He holds a CAP I coaching certification, and has seen his oldest daughter go from 12's - 18's at Northern Lights. Doug and his wife Lynne, along with Curt Glesmann own and operate Midwest Volleyball Warehouse.

12-2 Asst: Kathi Mohr Last season, Kathi was the assistant for our 11-1 team. Prior to that, she coached for the Eden Prairie Volleyball Assocation, as well as several recreational youth leagues.

     
11-1 Head: Megan Williams Megan enters her first season of coaching with Northern Lights. She is a former Northern Lights player with 7 years of playing experience. Her degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State and her current job as a nanny make her a great fit for coaching young players.
11-1 Asst: Garrett Wardell Garrett is starting his first year at Northern Lights. He is currently a student at Normandale Community College.
